Downball Australia’s School Community Clubs: Research Report 2025
Downball Australia is proud to release the 2025 School Community Clubs (SCC) Research Report, highlighting the impact of our pilot program on student engagement, physical literacy, and mental wellbeing.
The SCC initiative was designed to provide structured Downball sessions beyond the schoolyard, fostering community connections, active lifestyles, and inclusivity. Through weekly sessions, students developed key physical, psychological, social, and cognitive skills, with parents reporting noticeable improvements in their children’s confidence, coordination, and motivation.
Key findings from the report highlight:
Increased physical activity levels and social bonds among participants
Enhanced family engagement through parent-child activities
A Net Promoter Score of 38, reflecting strong community satisfaction
A scalable model for addressing childhood inactivity and social isolation
We extend our sincere thanks to Matt Cameron from VicHealth and Dr Erica Randle from La Trobe University’s Centre for Sport and Social Impact for their invaluable guidance and collaboration in this research.
The success of the SCC pilot positions Downball Australia as a leader in youth and community engagement, with future plans to expand the program into regional and metropolitan areas across Victoria.

2025 Update
More Workshops
This year, we’re expanding our Downball School Workshops to reach even more students across Australia. With workshops running in metro and regional areas—including Ballarat, Bendigo, Albury/Wodonga, Traralgon, Geelong and Shepparton—our mission is to ensure that every student gets the chance to learn, play and master the game. Our workshops teach not just skills and strategies but also the values of sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play.
More Tournaments
The demand for official Downball tournaments continues to grow, and 2025 will see the biggest tournament calendar yet! With more competitions across Victoria and an expansion into new states, players will have even more chances to put their skills to the test in a structured and competitive environment. Our annual Victorian Primary School Championship will return, bigger than ever, alongside new tournaments designed for secondary students and adult divisions.
Downball for Everyone
Whether you’re a student picking up a ball for the first time, a teacher looking to bring Downball into your school or a passionate player eager to compete at a high level, Downball Australia is here to make it happen. Our goal is to continue transforming Downball from a schoolyard pastime into a recognised sport with a thriving community.
Join us in 2025 as we take Downball to the next level—more workshops, more tournaments and more Downball!

A Downball Spectacle: Reliving the Tournament Moments!
The echoes of cheers, the rhythm of bouncing balls, and the unyielding spirit of competition - this year's Downball tournament was an unparalleled display of skill and sportsmanship. Every serve, rally, and game-deciding point showcased the brilliance of Downball and the talent of our incredible participants.
However, behind every great event lies the strength of its supporters. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to AMSLAN for their unwavering commitment. A big salute to VicHealth for championing health and sport. Kudos to Sportsdash not just for their generous support, but also for meticulously documenting every game's results. Cheers to Eastside Skoda and Mitsubishi for driving our ambitions forward. And a special nod to Spalding, the brand that became the heartbeat of every match with its iconic game ball.
Thank you to everyone who made this event an unforgettable experience. We can't wait to see you all next time for even more Downball thrills!
The Basque Championship of Downball - all the way from Northern Spain!
On the 27th of May, the Basque Association of Beach Tennis and Minority Sports organised the Basque Championship of Downball after being heavily intrigued by the Australian game.
After consulting with the Downball Australia team, they decided on a similar format to many of our unofficial tournaments. After lots of playing, Egoitz Campo defeated Mikel Maletxeberria in the Grand Final.
In September, they will be organising a Doubles Downball Tournament and we can’t wait for that!

Downball is still the recess king: Our collaboration with the ABC
Whether you know it as Downball, Handball or something else, kids have been playing this game all over the country for generations.
These days, school kids use a high-bounce rubber ball, which is a break from the tatty tennis ball tradition, and they say it adds some much-needed speed to the game.
That we don’t know where Downball came from (or whether it was invented by a kid) makes this sport all the more magical.
The Downball Grand Slam
In this video, 6 contestants tested out Grounded Pebble, the Beach and Wooden Varnish and hoped to bring their form from more orthodox Downball surfaces to the unreliability of the Grand Slam format.
