Downball Australia

We are Australia's first official downball league, founded by a bunch of downball fanatics in 2020. Downball, 4 Square, King, whatever you call it - downball is a game for everyone and we love it.

Downball, a very brief history.

Downball, or as it is traditionally known - downball, meaning "game of champions" in Greek, survived an unusual beginning in ancient Greece. A light-bulb moment occurred when feuding siblings needed to answer the age-old question “who was washing or drying the dishes tonight?” . Downball settled the argument - often being played for hours prior to the dishes being washed.

After the economic and social collapse of 1701 BC, downball became a distant memory with many thinking the game would never again see the light of day. That was until Danny “Downball” Rockett came along. Danny decided that the world once again needed an air of entertainment to fill its once-full, but now empty lungs. The only way….

DOWNBALL MUST BE PLAYED.

So, Danny committed his life to the concrete; always carrying a spare, faded ball in his back pocket, ready to start a fanatical game of downball at a moment’s notice. “The siblings of ancient Greece brought dishwashing wars to the concrete, but Danny brought downball to our hearts,” one year nine girl (Athens Secondary College) would later state.

It was a historic rise of inclusiveness and fun, perfectly mixed with an air of competitiveness that still exists today. Some will argue the game has been diluted from generation to generation. But how much would this phase the Concrete General himself? I answer this question with a quote. “No matter the state of the economy. The extent of war. The spread of starvation and risk of death, each time a ball is served on a concrete surface, I hear a whisper in the wind:

‘It’s Downball. Everyone can play’.” – Danny “Downball” Rockett.

Downball Culture

Downball still holds the same values that were introduced to the great game by Danny "Downball" Rockett. Which, as described in his autobiography 'Danny "Downball" Rockett, the life of a hero', includes inclusiveness, enthusiasm, respect and inclusiveness. Furthermore, these are the undisputed facts of downball: Downball is a game for EVERYONE.

EVERYONE is invited to play downball.

EVERYONE can play downball.

EVERYONE needs to play downball.

Inclusiveness.

Everyone is welcome to play, regardless of their age, gender or ability. If you are a living, breathing human, you are invited to play this great game.

Enthusiasm.

Bring your energy, a positive attitude and most importantly, fun. Skill level does not determine participation. Your can-do attitude is all you need to get on that court and play with all your might.

Respect.

Respect the old school rules, respect each other. If you can show your mad skills on the concrete, you can show your respect to everyone.
